Quick Answers First

Each answer gives the general rule. Your roof, policy and address can change the details, so use these as a starting point.

Who runs this site, and does it do roof work?

Roof Replacement Indianapolis IN is a free referral service, a go-between with no crews, no estimates of its own and no contracts. Your request goes to one independent roofer in your area, who looks at the roof, writes the estimate and does any work you agree to. The roofing company pays us for advertising.

What do I pay, and do I get anything for sending a request?

You pay nothing, and you receive nothing. Indiana law bars roofers from offering homeowners, or anyone else, gifts, credits or other rewards to win a job. If a roofer offers you something of value for signing or for a neighbor's name, treat it as a warning sign.

Does Indiana license roofers?

Not at the state level. The Indiana Attorney General points homeowners to their city or county, because the rules change from place to place. Inside Indianapolis, that office is the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services, where contractors get their local license or listing; in a suburb, ask the local building office. Then ask the roofer which local license or listing it holds, and for proof of liability insurance and workers' comp.

Will my Indianapolis roof replacement need a permit?

Often not, within limits. Across Marion County, either a listed contractor or the owner who lives in the house can re-roof a one- or two-family home without a building permit. A permit comes back into play when the shape changes, a heavier covering goes on (tile over shingles, say), rafters or a big patch of decking get swapped, or the material is applied with heat. Ask your roofer; the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services can settle any doubt.

My house is in a historic district. Does that change things?

It can. The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission's 2025 policies send any reroof covering over a quarter (25%) of a roof surface to IHPC staff for sign-off at minimum, matching shingles or not. Trading historic roofing for something that doesn't match is a hearing-officer decision. In the historic districts near downtown, talk to the IHPC before signing.

What does a new roof cost here?

Statewide 2026 averages from RoofObservations put Indiana architectural shingles at about $6.25 per square foot of roof surface and Indiana standing-seam metal at about $13.00, tear-off included. Steep pitches and decking repair push a job higher. The cost guide lists all five rows, and the cost calculator turns your home's size into a rough range.

Can a roofer help with my insurance claim?

Only up to a point. A roofer can photograph and measure the damage and put an estimate in writing, but the claim stays between you and your insurer. Indiana does not let contractors act as public adjusters. If you want someone in your corner, that means an attorney or a public adjuster holding an Indiana Department of Insurance license. This site takes no part in claims.

A roofer said it would take care of my deductible. Can it?

No. Under Indiana law, a contractor can't cover, forgive or refund your deductible, in whole or in part, and can't use discounts, gifts or other compensation as bait for the job. Your deductible is yours to pay, and a roofer who suggests otherwise has given you a good reason to look elsewhere.

Can I cancel a roofing contract after I sign it?

Yes, for a short time. The deadline is midnight at the end of the third business day after you sign. When insurance is paying and the insurer's written final decision on the claim reaches you later than that, the three days run from that letter instead. Either way, the roofer owes you a cancellation form, so ask for it if one is missing.

Someone knocked on my door offering a new roof. Any extra rules?

Yes. Indiana's home solicitation law covers unsolicited sales of $25 or more made at your home and lets you back out up to midnight at the close of the third business day. Take your time with any porch offer, and ask for a local license or listing, proof of insurance and an itemized contract first.
